April Snow Happy Heart Block

As well as all the usual celebrations which take place over the Easter weekend, this year there was an extra reason for excitement and that was the release of the April Snow Happy Hearts Pattern designed by Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill Designs.

As soon as I knew the pattern was available I downloaded it.  This month it depicts the cutest little snowman holding an umbrella to protect him from the April showers and, that is the theme that I chose to follow with my block design.

I set about piecing together my block leaving an 8 inch x 8 inch central panel which I could embroider with the words 'April' and 'Showers'.  I left enough room for my Snow Happy Heart to be appliqued later and found that I had a little space left in one corner so, I added some extra embroidery in the shape of a daisy.

All the embroidery was completed using variegated silk threads by Stef Francis.

I followed the pattern instructions to complete the applique onto my chosen heart background fabric.  I decided to embroider the umbrella handle as Anne suggests in the pattern. I then cut out the heart shape and appliqued it to my block background fabric.

As the finished block is the first block of what will be the second row of blocks in my quilt, I wasn't able to attach it to the completed blocks I have made so far.  That will have to wait until I have made a couple more blocks but, this photo gives you an idea of what it will look like.

I am really pleased with the results! If you are interested in following along with my Snow Happy Heart Quilt I have, with Anne's kind permission, added a 'Snow Happy Heart Quilt' page to my blog which gives the details of the individual blocks and their measurements. The link is on the right hand sidebar under 'Pages' (below the photograph of the embroidered wheelbarrow).

  6. You remind me each month that this is a beautiful BOM, and it would really look good in combination with the basket quilt that is in my dining room right now.
